The PlayStation 5 Pro offers enhanced graphics and performance compared to the Xbox Series X, but this comes with a price tag of $800. Despite the PS5 Pro’s improved power, there’s one area where Microsoft’s console still holds a clear advantage, a feature that has persisted throughout this console generation.

As highlighted by Vincent Teoh, a display expert from HDTV Test, the PS5 Pro retains the same HDMI 2.1 bandwidth as the original PlayStation 5, limited to 32Gbps. This bandwidth can only support 4K/120Hz at YUV 4:2:2 chroma subsampling.

In contrast, the Xbox Series X boasts a higher HDMI 2.1 bandwidth of 40Gbps, allowing it to output at 4K/120Hz with full RGB 4:4:4 chroma. Teoh observed this difference using a Philips 2024 OLED TV, which can accurately display the HDMI bandwidth of any connected device.

For most users, this difference in bandwidth and chroma subsampling may not be particularly noticeable. Unless you’re a display enthusiast, the impact is minimal. However, the Xbox Series X can produce a picture with more detailed color and luminance, as it isn’t as compressed as the PS5 Pro’s output.

While chroma subsampling (specifically 4:2:2) is less of an issue for most viewers, it does become more apparent when there’s text on screen with contrasting backgrounds—such as when using the Xbox Series X browser for writing or editing. The PS5, however, lacks an internet browser, which somewhat sidesteps this concern.

It’s surprising that, given the PS5 Pro’s status as a high-end gaming console, Sony hasn’t addressed this area by offering a more advanced output. The fact that it still uses compressed imagery in certain contexts seems like a missed opportunity for a top-tier system.
